The Greek Gift
The Greek Gift is a commissioned work of 7 photographs for The Zillers Athens Boutique Hotel
Athens is astonishing. Τhe city’s most revealing aspects are those that depart from the expected, familiar and treasured historic cityscapes, those that invite the gaze down a more obscure path. Argyris Drolapas’s photographs organize a new a visual culture around Athens, using his black-and-white, duotone impressions of the city, intimate yet simultaneously distanced, to pose both ambiguous and succinct questions. With a combination of harshness and tenderness, the city gradually emerges from the now-distant 20th century, a time when Athens swelled rapidly and acquired all the characteristics of a metropolis. Its hybrid architecture, comprising neoclassical relics and all the stages of Modernism, makes Athens a charming melting pot that stands out in the Mediterranean world. These insights in stills into a personal point of view that is well practiced in “reading” the urban landscape, introduce us to a city that is much more complex and less predictable than the prevailing stereotypes that define it. Η Αθήνα εκπλήσσει. Οι πιο αποκαλυπτικές της όψεις είναι εκείνες που αποκλίνουν από την αναμενόμενη, οικεία και αγαπητή τοπιογραφία της πόλης, εκείνες που παρασύρουν το βλέμμα σε πιο ανορθόδοξες αναγνώσεις. Οι φωτογραφίες του Αργύρη Δρόλαπα oργανώνουν έναν οπτικό πολιτισμό γύρω από την Αθήνα, με όχημα την ασπρόμαυρη, διτονική, θερμή και ψυχρή ταυτόχρονα, αποτύπωση μίας αμφίσημης και ρευστής σε ερμηνείες πόλης. Με έναν συνδυασμό τραχύτητας και τρυφερότητας, αναδύεται σταδιακά η πόλη από τον βαθύ, και μακρινό πλέον, 20ό αιώνα, στη διάρκεια του οποίου η Αθήνα γιγαντώθηκε και απέκτησε μητροπολιτικά χαρακτηριστικά. Η υβριδική αρχιτεκτονική της, τα νεοκλασικά ίχνη και όλες οι φάσεις του μοντερνισμού, δίνουν στην Αθήνα μια γοητευτική πρόσμειξη που την καθιστούν μοναδική στον μεσογειακό κόσμο. Τα φωτογραφικά, αυτά, δείγματα, ενός προσωπικού βλέμματος, εξασκημένου στην αστική αποκρυπτογράφηση, μας εισαγάγουν σε μία πόλη περισσότερο σύνθετη και λιγότερο προβλέψιμη από τη στερεότυπη εικόνα της. Alpha, the movie
Alpha was a commissioned work for production and backstage photographs of a crowd funded movie.
A l p h a is a Transmedia Cinematic Performance inspired by the ancient myth of Antigone and talks about what we are all witnessing and experiencing as consequences of the so-called “crisis”.
A l p h a will be initially projected in Ancient Theatres and Open-Air Theatres with a live quartet, a live chorus and a live actor, thus blurring the lines between Cinema, Theatre, Performance and Concert.
In its Urban Version, it will be shown in Alternative Venues and Art Spaces, with its live quartet, chorus and actor, while at the same time, parallel exhibitions from invited artists from many art forms, will create a thematic universe, exploring the relevance of the myth of Antigone today.
